The commentaries of Martin Heidegger on the lyric poems of Friedrich Holderlin are an extraordinary encounter between poetry and the penetrating thought of a powerful philosophical mind. Stemming from the time of Goethe, Hegel, and Romanticism, Holderlin's poems are among the most loved and admired in all of German literature; and Heidegger's discussion and analysis adds to their depth. Heidegger's commentaries generated heated discussion among German scholars and literary critics, especially in the case of Holderlin. He turned to Holderlin in the 1930s and often revisited the poet's work in subsequent decades. In the 1936 lecture Holderlin and the Essence of Poetry, Heidegger presents Holderlin as the most unique of the poets, and he clarifies his wish to learn from Holderlin the possibilities of language, the relationship between gods and mortals, and the meaning of national history. These are also the themes Heidegger develops in his later treatments of several great poems by Holderlin: Homecoming, As on a Holiday, Rememberance, and Greece. The writings included here are essential to the study of Heidegger's later work, pinpointing his innermost thoughts on poetry, language, and how we think.
